Arundo donax
Giant Reed
Arundo donax is one of the fastest growing plants with growth rates that can approach 4 inches per day. Under appropriate conditions, grows to a height of 20 to 30 feet and produces a feathery plume of primarily infertile seeds in late summer. Grey green leaves are alternate and up to 24 inches long. The hollow stems are approximately 1 inch in diameter and have traditionally been used for reeds in woodwind instruments. Spreads primarily by underground rhizomes forming large stands. Prefers sun and moist sandy soils but is highly drought tolerant. USDA zone 6.
