Japanese Jack-in-the-pulpit is an perennial woodland tuber producing a 12'' green stalk supporting two five-lobed leaves possessing varying shades of green. At the stalks terminus a flower-like pitcher is produced colored a dark purple on the outside with an interior of snow white. A hood over the pitcher is quite colorful with dark green and white striping. A bulbous interior white spadix protrudes from the interior of the pitcher. The hermaphrodite plant produces a mass of green berries on the spadix which become bright red as the fruit matures. Prefers part sun to full shade in moist well-drained humus-rich soils. USDA zone 6.
